Over three quarters of sixth form students feel that they do not get enough help when writing their 'Personal statement' element of their applications to university.

While at first sight the personal statement might look like something that any student ought to be able to write without too much bother, it is in fact an extraordinarily difficult document to get right.  It is also one of the main pointers that universities use when deciding who to accept and who to reject.  So it is worrying that 76.1% of over 1600 students who took part in a survey answered the question “Do schools provide enough personal statement support” with a resounding “no”.  The fact is that students who do get some help in developing their personal statements get more offers of places than students who don’t get this help.

The survey was undertaken by Apply2 – publishers of 'How to Write a Successful University Personal Statement, The Apply2Uni Guide to Levelling the Playing Field' and 'The Apply2Medicine Guide to Writing your Medical School Personal Statement, Your Way , Successfully'. The books take the students through every aspect of the personal statement and enable them to present themselves in a much clearer and more positive way.  They cover both the content and style that is required, encouraging the students to express themselves, rather than having them present a version of themselves, edited into a form that they wrongly believe the universities want. Matt Green, co-author of these books, is available for interview.  Copies of the books are available upon request for review, please contact  – 07976 597168

Top universities admit bias in university application process

It was recently reported in the national press that top universities are operating 'postcode selection' to ensure that they admit more students from less privileged backgrounds. Admissions tutors have explained that they are trying to "spot hidden potential by identifying applicants who may have been hampered by poor teaching or low expectations" (Daily Mail, April 2 2007). In essence this means that top universities are allowing certain applicants to submit additional information alongside the standard application form, as well as dropping entry requirements in certain cases. In response to these measures, Apply2 Ltd. Managing Director Matt Green said: "This demonstrates the intense competition for university places, as well as the huge importance of getting your application and personal statement exactly right. By allowing applicants from more deprived backgrounds to submit further information and setting them lower entry requirements, top universities are finally recognising the inherent bias within the university application process towards more socially and educationally privileged students". Through our personal statement editing services, Apply2Uni are committed to levelling the playing field and giving you the best possible chance of success in an increasingly competitive environment.

The Guardian Education Supplement

The article below was written by an undercover journalist from The Guardian who subscribed to use our platinum personal statement writing service. As you can see the feedback was extremely positive. guardian weekly logo.jpg

'Apply2uni emailed me the four-page questionnaire its writers use to make up the personal statement. At this stage, I began to question how much this service really decreases the workload. I was told to answer the 40 questions in detail; they ranged from 'How would you describe yourself as a person?" and 'How have your current studies influenced your decision to study your chosen subject at university?' to 'Explain how you will cope with the pressures of studying your chosen subject'.

'I was prepared to hate my paid-for personal statement - but when it arrived, I had to admit it was good. The language was elaborate enough to make me sound intelligent, but avoided thesaurus-reaching on my part. Some sentences were too long, but it gave a strong sense of my desire to study English and the contribution I wanted to make at university'.
